Chapter 1 of 8

The brief

Strengthen the We Proudly Serve Starbucks® Coffee Programme in South Africa and take the brand into hotels, golf courses, airports, healthcare hubs, student spaces, business cafés and malls, so that Starbucks becomes the lifestyle coffee of choice.

The strategic intent: embed Starbucks in people's daily journeys through instant gratification, personal rewards and convenience. In South Africa, Starbucks stands for luxury within reach, and the app had to sound like it: sophisticated but approachable, aspirational yet inclusive.

The idea

Illustration: a hand holding a green phone with the Starbucks logo, with gold stars bursting from the screen.

Life is liquid luxury, warmed by your Starbucks.

Every Starbucks moment earns stars: a coffee bought, a Coffee Spot visited, a photo shared, a friend brought along. Stars climb a leaderboard, buy scratch cards and turn into rewards, and every action tells Starbucks a little more about how South Africa drinks its coffee.

  • Grow loyalty and retention with instant recognition
  • Make coffee an everyday companion across premium touchpoints
  • Reinforce Starbucks as an accessible symbol of everyday luxury
  • Build first-party data and mindshare in the premium market
  • Connect people, spaces and experiences
  • Stay the default coffee choice across daily journeys

A member's journey, start to finish

From the first check-in to a reward in hand: nine steps in the app.

Nine steps

  1. Check in at a Coffee SpotA GPS-verified check-in at a participating Coffee Spot earns 20 stars and stamps a digital badge in the Passport. Starbucks Passport screen: eight Coffee Spot stamp badges, from Campus Buzz to Cafe Culture, above a Check-in button.
  2. Order from the menuIn-app menu ordering shows the stars each drink and food item earns. Starbucks menu screen with drinks categories, from hot coffee to bottled beverages, and food items.
  3. Scan the QR code at the tillThe member's rotating QR code is scanned at the till, the purchase is matched to their profile and stars are awarded straight away: 10 for every R100. Starbucks screen showing the member QR code above a Make a Purchase button.
  4. Upload a till slipA photo of the till slip earns 10 stars for each validated coffee, and a Starbucks Shopper badge. Starbucks Submit Till Slip screen showing a photographed Starbucks receipt and a Capture Till Slip button.
  5. Answer a short surveyEach completed lifestyle survey earns 10 stars and tells Starbucks how and where its customers enjoy coffee. Starbucks survey screen asking where you most enjoy sipping on a Starbucks, with tick boxes and a Submit Survey button.
  6. Invite a friendMembers earn 20 stars for each friend who registers and verifies, and 5 more for every vote a friend gives their photo. Invite your friends and everybody wins screen: you get bonus stars, they get a free drink, with a Send Invite button.
  7. Scratch the CupEvery 50 stars earn a scratch card, at most one a day, that hides an instant prize or an extra draw entry. Starbucks Scratch and Win screen with a takeaway cup on coffee beans and a 50 stars per scratch button.
  8. Climb the leaderboardA live leaderboard with weekly spot prizes and extra entries into the grand prize draw. Starbucks live leaderboard screen ranking the top eight members by points, with their names and profile photos.

Scratch the Cup, and what members could win

Scratch the Cup. Win the fun. Every 50 stars unlock a scratch card; rub the Starbucks cup and see what is underneath: an instant prize, or one more entry into the grand draw.

It keeps members coming back, gives Starbucks control over how prizes are given out, and turns a points balance into a small moment of suspense.

  • Scratch and Win screen: a Starbucks cup on coffee beans, 50 stars per scratch.

  • Live leaderboard of the top eight members, with their names and profile photos.

The prize ladder

  1. Instant, from the scratch card A Starbucks takeaway cup. R50 · R100 · a free coffee

Starbucks vouchers or a free coffee on the spot, or an extra entry into the grand prize draw. Daily giveaways of Starbucks gift hampers too.

  2. The rewards catalogue From 50 stars

    A complimentary coffee for 50 stars, a branded T-shirt for 500, earbuds for 700, a flask for 750, a hoodie for 800, a Bluetooth speaker for 920 and a backpack for 1,000.

  3. The grand draw, three tiers A Reserve Roastery trip

Chapter 5 of 8

Every mechanic, in detail

Nine ways to earn and engage, each one feeding the leaderboard and the data.

Sign-up you can trust

Members register by logging in securely with Instagram, which links their handle so photo challenge posts are tracked automatically. They then verify their mobile number with a one-time PIN, and registration is limited to one account per device, which prevents fraud and duplicate accounts.

Instagram challenges+20 / +30

Coffee Lifestyle: a photo with a Starbucks in hand, in a lifestyle setting, tagged #StarbucksSA #InstantRewards #LifeIsLiquidLuxury: 20 stars if approved. Starbucks Spots: a photo at any Starbucks Coffee Spot, tagged #StarbucksSA #StarbucksCoffeeSpot: 30 stars if approved. One entry per challenge a week, and friends can vote. Coffee Spots become branded Instagram studios, building venue visibility and foot traffic.

The Starbucks Passport+20

Log in, visit a participating Coffee Spot on selected days and tap Check-In: GPS confirms the location. Each successful check-in earns 20 stars and unlocks a digital badge; progress shows in the live Passport gallery, and more stamps mean a higher place on the leaderboard.

Starbucks Passport screen with eight Coffee Spot stamps and a Check-in button.
Menu ordering with stars10 per R100

The in-app menu separates drinks and food and shows the stars each item earns, which encourages bigger orders and lets Starbucks track category performance, such as morning coffee against lunch, to shape promotions and the menu.

Till integration and vouchers

The member's rotating QR code is scanned at the till. The till sends the purchase (QR ID, items and amount) to the app, which matches it to the member in real time and awards 10 stars per R100 on drinks or food. Cumulative spend flags big spenders for VIP status. At a set balance the system generates a unique voucher; when staff scan it, it is marked as used, so every free coffee is accounted for.

Till-slip uploads+10

Buy any Starbucks product at a participating outlet, snap the till slip and upload it: 10 stars for each validated coffee, up to 10 to 15 coffees a week, and a Starbucks Shopper badge in the Passport for every successful upload.

Surveys and invites+10 / +20

Short lifestyle and brand surveys earn 10 stars each, with new ones released through the campaign, and their answers inform future marketing. Invite a Friend sends a WhatsApp link: 20 stars for each friend who registers and verifies, and 5 stars for every vote a friend gives the member's photo.

The Coffeehouse playlist

A curated Starbucks Coffeehouse playlist, built for sunset vibes, beach parties and chill moments, plays in the app or can be added to a Spotify library. Members share the link on Instagram, X, Facebook and WhatsApp and tag their “Coffee Spot Moment”: a daily reminder of the lifestyle, beyond the physical spaces.

An influencer programme

Influencers join through the app, connect their Instagram, TikTok or YouTube accounts and are paid per approved post, based on views. The CMS approves and rates posts, tracks reach and sign-ups, and processes payouts.
